For a first visit, Nuremberg is the most flexible base, Bamberg is the most beautiful beer city, and Forchheim is the most practical entry point for beer cellars and Franconian Switzerland. Without a car: Nuremberg, Bamberg, Erlangen, Forchheim and many places on regional rail lines. For day trips inside Bavaria, the Bayern Ticket can be useful if you use regional transport and do not need ICE/IC trains.
Festival Calendar
Franconia does not have one single beer festival. The important dates are regional, seasonal and very different. Alongside major festivals such as Bergkirchweih, Annafest or Sandkerwa, local Kärwas are among the best reasons to visit in summer and autumn. The table shows the usual seasonal pattern; always check exact annual dates on official pages or with local organisers before planning.
Exact dates change every year. The official links lead to current dates, programmes or organiser information.

Kärwa: the underrated reason to visit
Kärwa, Kerwa or Kirwa is the local word for Kirchweih, a parish or village fair. For visitors, these village and neighbourhood festivals are often one of the best reasons to visit Franconia in summer or autumn: less staged than the big beer festivals, more rooted in local life, and a good way to experience beer, Brotzeit and everyday regional culture together.
Important: dates, locations and beer service change every year. Find My Seidla treats Kärwa as a cultural and seasonal pattern, not as a complete event calendar.

Getting There
By Train
Nuremberg, Bamberg, Erlangen and Forchheim are very easy by rail. From Nuremberg, regional trains reach many beer towns quickly. For day trips inside Bavaria, the Bayern Ticket can be practical if you use regional transport and check the return connection first. Individual village breweries often require bus timetables, taxi, bike, an overnight stay or very careful planning.
By Car / Rental Car
A car helps in Fränkische Schweiz, but only if it is clear who is not drinking. For real beer hikes, rail plus an overnight stay is often more relaxed than a rental car.

Showaround - Local Guides
Private local guides can be useful if you want to experience Nuremberg or Bamberg beyond the standard list. For small breweries and cellars, you still need to check opening hours yourself.
Showaround - Local Guides* →GetYourGuide - Group Tours
There are guided Bamberg tours with several stops. Good for first-time visitors, less useful if you specifically want small village breweries.
GetYourGuide Bamberg* →Bayern Ticket: when it helps for beer trips
For many Franconian beer days, the best solution is not a rental car but a properly planned regional-train day. The Bayern Ticket can help when you travel inside Bavaria by local and regional transport, for example from Nuremberg to Bamberg, Forchheim, Erlangen or toward the Fünf-Seidla-Steig®.
Quick orientation
- Good for: day trips by regional train, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram and bus inside Bavaria
- Typical Franconia cases: Nuremberg to Bamberg, Forchheim, Erlangen or well-connected beer hikes
- Not automatically good: village breweries with weak bus links, late returns or several small places in one day
- Check: regional transport filter, time rules, return trip, bus validity, bicycle rules and current prices
Important before buying
Important: according to DB, the ticket is valid on regional/local transport, transport associations and almost all scheduled buses in Bavaria, but not on long-distance trains such as ICE or IC. Prices, times and detailed rules can change, so always check Deutsche Bahn before buying.
Best Time to Visit
May and June are ideal for beer cellars and hiking: green, warm and not yet full midsummer.
Whitsun belongs to the Erlanger Bergkirchweih. Book early or avoid it if you want quiet.
Late July means Annafest in Forchheim. Beautiful, but accommodation should be secured early.
August brings many festivals, Sandkerwa, Volksfest atmosphere and local Kärwas. Good, but busier.
September and October are strong for Altstadtfest, late cellar visits, village Kirchweih festivals, autumn light and Bockbier dates.
