By train: search the whole journey
Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof is the region’s main long-distance rail hub. Regional trains run from there to Erlangen, Forchheim, Bamberg and other parts of Franconia. If Bamberg is already your first substantial stay, however, search directly to Bamberg rather than automatically spending a night in Nuremberg.
Journey times in a general table age quickly because of construction work, timetable changes and different train types. A useful search therefore includes your starting address, accommodation and travel date. It should also show whether the final leg is on foot, by city transport or by an infrequent rural bus.

Regional transport and seasonal leisure buses
DB and the transport associations cover the main railway routes well. Villages, walking routes and beer cellars may need an additional bus. Within the VGN area, leisure routes extend the network seasonally; they are not a year-round substitute for a frequent city bus. Search the outward and return legs as one journey and confirm that the return still runs after your planned stop.

By plane
Nuremberg Airport is the only airport directly inside a major Franconian city. Underground line U2 links the airport directly with Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof. Long-distance and regional trains continue from there. A useful detail for international visitors: this is an underground train, not an S-Bahn.
Munich and Frankfurt offer more international flights but lie outside Franconia. Compare more than the airfare: search the airport transfer, long-distance train and final regional connection as one chain. A late arrival can make an apparently attractive flight impractical if the last train or bus has already left.
When a car helps
A car is often unnecessary for central Nuremberg and Bamberg or rail destinations such as Erlangen and Forchheim. It helps with scattered brewery villages, remote Keller and landscape routes without a useful bus. If beer is the reason for driving, assign a sober driver before departure; deciding later is not a transport plan.
A mixed trip can begin by train and use a hire car for one clearly defined rural day. A taxi, suitable cycling route or overnight stay at the destination are alternatives. A car solves the final mile, not the safe return after several beer stops.
