Nuremberg is the most practical entry point for many Franconia trips. By ICE train, Nuremberg can be reached from Munich Hbf from about 1 hr 10 min, from Frankfurt Hbf from about 2 hr and from Berlin Hbf, depending on the connection, from about 2 hr 45 min to 3 hr 25 min. From Nuremberg, trains continue to Bamberg, Erlangen, Forchheim and Coburg. For regional day trips inside Bavaria, the Bayern Ticket can be useful if you use regional transport and do not need ICE/IC trains.

By Train: Usually the Easiest Option
For many Franconia trips, the train is the easiest first choice. Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof is well connected to German long-distance rail, and from there many important places in Franconia are reachable without a car. For beer travel, that matters: the bigger towns and several classics can be combined well by train and public transport.
Important: journey times change depending on weekday, construction works, transfers and specific connection. Always check your exact trip shortly before travelling in the DB app or with the local transport provider.

Bayern Ticket for regional beer day trips
If you are already in Bavaria and planning a regional day trip, the Bayern Ticket can be very practical. Typical cases include Nuremberg to Bamberg, Forchheim, Erlangen or well-connected beer hikes such as the Fünf-Seidla-Steig®.
Important: the Bayern Ticket is intended for regional/local transport. According to DB, it is valid on local/regional trains, transport associations and almost all scheduled buses in Bavaria, but not on long-distance trains such as ICE or IC. Always check current prices, validity times and detailed rules directly with Deutsche Bahn.

By Car
A car is useful in Franconia mainly for smaller places, beer cellars, brewery villages and trips away from the main rail corridors. For Nuremberg, Bamberg, Erlangen and Forchheim, you often do not need one. If beer is the main reason for your trip, always plan sober transport: train, bus, taxi, accommodation within walking distance or someone who does not drink.
For arrival by car: Nuremberg is well connected via major motorway corridors such as the A3 and A9. Bamberg is connected via the A70 and A73. In old towns such as Bamberg or Nuremberg, parking is often less convenient than arriving by train.
By Plane
Nuremberg Airport (NUE) is the most direct airport option for Franconia. From the airport, the U2 underground line takes about 12 minutes to Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof. Note: this is not an S-Bahn connection.
Munich Airport (MUC) is the larger international alternative, but it is not directly next to Franconia. From Munich Airport to Nuremberg you should expect about 1 hr 40 min to well over 2 hr 30 min by train, depending on the connection. Do not confuse this with the pure ICE journey time from Munich Hbf to Nuremberg Hbf.
