The key beer hiking route: official trail description, map, GPS data, rules, RB21 rail access and bus lines 226 and 229.
Beer hiking in Franconia does not mean rushing from drink to drink. It means good paths, small breweries, beer cellars, Brotzeit and enough time between stops. The best-known routes are in Franconian Switzerland, but Pottenstein, Gößweinstein, Ebermannstadt/Wiesenttal, Altmühltal and Fichtelgebirge also work as hiking bases.
The Fünf-Seidla-Steig is the best-known starting point: 10 km one-way or 17 to 20 km as a circular route, with five breweries around Weißenohe and Gräfenberg. The Aufseßer Brauereienweg is more compact: about 14 km circular route to four breweries in the world-record municipality of Aufseß. For longer or quieter trips, Pottenstein, Gößweinstein, Ebermannstadt/Wiesenttal, Altmühltal and Fichtelgebirge are useful hiking bases, but not a guarantee of daily brewery stops.
The classic route in southern Fränkische Schweiz. The one-way trail connects five private breweries over about 10 km; as a circular route, it is roughly 17 to 20 km depending on variant. It is waymarked, reachable by the Gräfenbergbahn and still a real hike, not a pub crawl.
The 5 stops: Klosterbrauerei Weißenohe - Brauerei Friedmann (Gräfenberg) - Lindenbräu (Gräfenberg) - Brauereigasthaus Hofmann (Hohenschwärz) - Elch-Bräu (Thuisbrunn)
Full Route Guide →Aufseß is famous for having four breweries in a very small area. The Brauereienweg is a circular route of about 14 km and connects Rothenbach, Stadter, Reichold and Kathi-Bräu. It is quieter than the Fünf-Seidla-Steig, but without opening-hour planning it can quickly become frustrating.
The famous entry route with five breweries around Weißenohe, Gräfenberg, Hohenschwärz and Thuisbrunn.
The world-record municipality as a circular trail. Beautiful and compact, but only good with opening hours checked.
A useful base if you want to combine scenery, caves, cliffs and beer stops in Franconian Switzerland.
A good quieter hiking and day-trip anchor, especially when beer is not the only part of the plan.
A practical starting point for hikes, villages and breweries in Franconian Switzerland, with more planning flexibility than tiny single villages.
Not a classic hiking trail, but ideal for first-timers: breweries, Rauchbier and cellars on foot.
Less dense than Upper Franconia, but good for quieter tours, nature days and beer stops as part of a broader trip.
A good region if you want to connect beer culture with forests, upland trails and quieter towns.
For small village breweries away from rail lines. Only sensible with a driver, overnight stay or very sober planning.
Find My Seidla helps with context and trip planning. For navigation, GPX files, current transport details and official route notes, also open the official route and transport pages. The Frankenweg and Jakobsweg are not beer trails, but they are useful long-distance and slow-travel context. The Schwarzachklamm is not a beer destination, but it is a strong nature day trip from Nuremberg with nearby food and drink options.
