What Is the Fünf-Seidla-Steig?

The Fünf-Seidla-Steig is a beer hiking trail in southern Fränkische Schweiz. It leads through forest and meadow landscapes to five private breweries in the Gräfenberg and Weißenohe area. The route is waymarked and follows German Hiking Association quality guidelines.

The name is Franconian and charming, but should not be misunderstood: five Seidla are not a drinking target. The route works best when you hike slowly, eat properly, carry water and do not treat every brewery stop as mandatory.

The Five Breweries

Stop 1: Klosterbrauerei Weißenohe

Klosterbrauerei Weißenohe traces its roots to the former Benedictine monastery of St Bonifatius. Since 1827, the brewery and inn have been family-owned. Specialities include traditional Franconian beers such as Zwickel Pils, seasonal beers, organic beers brewed to Bioland standards and modern cold-hopped variants. The brewery is close to Weißenohe station, making it a good starting point.

Stop 2: Brauerei Friedmann, Gräfenberg

In Gräfenberg, Friedmann is one of the fixed addresses on the trail. Depending on season and weather, Friedmanns Bräustüberl or the Biergarten zum Bergschlösschen may be the right stop. Opening times can differ between summer and winter, so check the current details before going.

Stop 3: Lindenbräu, Gräfenberg

Lindenbräu is another private brewery in Gräfenberg on the trail. It is known for Franconian Vollbier, naturally cloudy wheat beer and hop-forward specialities. If you are planning a shorter version, Gräfenberg works well as an entry or exit point.

Stop 4: Brauereigasthaus Hofmann, Hohenschwärz

Brauereigasthaus Hofmann in Hohenschwärz was founded in 1897 and is run as a family business. Its Hofmannstropfen beers are brewed in a wood-fired kettle using regional raw materials. Beer specialities include dark Hofmannstropfen and naturally cloudy Helles.

Stop 5: Elch-Bräu / Gasthof Seitz, Thuisbrunn

Elch-Bräu in Thuisbrunn belongs to Gasthof Seitz and is the youngest of the five breweries on the trail. The brewery was founded in 2007. It is known for naturally cloudy beers such as Kellerpils and dark beer. Thuisbrunn is beautifully located, but the return journey needs planning, especially in the evening.

Route Variants

Two Useful Options

  • One-way route: about 10 km from Weißenohe towards Thuisbrunn, with five brewery stops along the route.
  • Circular route: about 17 km from/to Gräfenberg station or about 19 to 20 km from/to Weißenohe station, depending on exact variant.
  • Stamp card: available at the breweries. Collect all five stamps to buy the Fünf-Seidla-Steig beer mug at a reduced price.

Do Not Underestimate the Return Trip

Getting there is easy, but the return should be planned. From Gräfenberg and Weißenohe stations, the Gräfenbergbahn runs back towards Nuremberg. Along the route, bus lines such as the seasonal Trubachtal-Express and line 226 serve parts of the area; line 226 may operate as a call-and-collect taxi at certain times.

Important: according to the official Fünf-Seidla-Steig site, there is no regular return connection after 8:16 pm from the direction of Thuisbrunn. If you stay later, you need a taxi, pick-up, overnight stay or a carefully planned connection.

Practical Notes

What You Need to Know

  • Always check opening times, rest days and holidays directly on fuenf-seidla-steig.de
  • Friday and Saturday are often the easiest days, but holidays still matter
  • Groups of 10 or more should reserve with the inns
  • Groups of 6 or more should register bus travel during busy periods
  • Ascension Day, Easter and Whitsun can be very busy
  • According to the official rules, very drunk, loud groups and recognisable bachelor parties may not be served
  • Proper footwear is sensible: there are climbs, forest paths and narrow sections
  • Whoever drives does not drink. Train, bus, taxi or an overnight stay is the better plan.

Getting There

The easiest access is via Nuremberg-Nordost on the Gräfenbergbahn RB21 to Weißenohe or Gräfenberg. The journey takes around 40 minutes. Coming from Nuremberg, you can start without a car and return by train, bus, taxi or circular route.

Driving is possible, but not ideal for a beer hike. If you come by car, decide in advance who will stay sober or how everyone gets back safely.
