A good car route through Fränkische Schweiz runs from Forchheim via Hallerndorf and Kreuzberg to Ebermannstadt, then towards Pottenstein and Gößweinstein and back through the Wiesenttal valley. Depending on detours, expect roughly 70 to 100 km. It is possible in one day, but two days with an overnight stay is better. Important: the driver drinks no alcohol. If you want to really taste the beer, plan accommodation, public transport, taxis or hiking stages.

Before You Start

  • Whoever drives stays alcohol-free. That is the cleanest and safest rule.
  • A car is useful for remote villages, but not for beer tasting at the wheel.
  • If you want to drink beer: stay overnight, hike, use public transport or plan a taxi.
  • Many cellars open seasonally, depending on weather or only on certain days. Check first.
  • Check addresses and opening hours directly with the brewery, Keller or current Google listing.

The Route: Forchheim, Hallerndorf, Ebermannstadt, Pottenstein, Gößweinstein

Forchheim is a good starting point: rail connection, its own breweries, the Kellerwald and a direct position at the edge of Fränkische Schweiz. From there, a detour to Hallerndorf and Kreuzberg is worth it, then continue to Ebermannstadt and along the B470 towards Pottenstein and Gößweinstein.

Total distance: roughly 70 to 100 km, depending on detours
Time needed: one full day for an overview, ideally two days with an overnight stay

Stop 1: Forchheim

Forchheim is the best starting point for this road trip. The town has active breweries such as Neder, Hebendanz and Greif, plus the Kellerwald with 23 managed beer cellars. Especially in summer and around Annafest, the Kellerwald is one of Franconia's key beer places.

As a road trip start, Forchheim also works if nobody is drinking: old town, Kellerwald walk, food, bottle shopping, then continue. If you want to drink, stay overnight or return by train.

Stop 2: Hallerndorf and Kreuzberg

Hallerndorf lies northwest of Forchheim and is one of the most important beer communities in the region. Kreuzberg is especially interesting, with several beer cellars close together. Rittmayer Keller am Kreuzberg lies directly below the pilgrimage church and is described by Brauerei Rittmayer as one of the best-known cellars in the region. Rittmayer mentions brewing tradition since 1422 and explicitly says the Keller rests on rainy days.

Again: as the driver, do not taste. This stop makes sense for food, Keller atmosphere, alcohol-free drinks, bottle purchases or passengers who are not driving. If you want to properly enjoy Kreuzberg, plan bus, taxi, bicycle or overnight accommodation.

Stop 3: Ebermannstadt

Ebermannstadt is a useful orientation point in Fränkische Schweiz. The tourist office for the region is based here, and the town sits conveniently between Forchheim, Wiesenttal, Pottenstein and Gößweinstein. Ebermannstadt itself also has a local beer address with Schwanen Bräu.

As a base for two days, Ebermannstadt makes sense: smaller than Forchheim, closer to the core of Fränkische Schweiz and useful if you want to combine nature, hiking and beer places.

Stop 4: Pottenstein and Surroundings

Pottenstein is one of the strongest landscape stops on the route: cliffs, valleys, caves, castle and classic Fränkische Schweiz atmosphere. For beer travellers, the town and surroundings include regional brewery addresses such as Brauerei Mager and Gasthausbrauerei Hufeisen. Check opening hours and beer service directly, because small breweries and taverns are not always open every day or all day.

Pottenstein is a good pause point, but not a quick “three beers and drive on” stop. Better: eat, see the town, maybe buy beer for later, then continue.

Stop 5: Gößweinstein

Gößweinstein is mainly a scenery and culture stop: basilica, castle, rocks, hiking trails and views. The tourist office describes Gößweinstein as a holiday centre of Fränkische Schweiz. For this road trip, it is therefore more the beautiful finale than the main brewery stop.

The old wording “several guesthouses and breweries below” was too strong. Cleaner wording: in Gößweinstein you will find gastronomy and Franconian food, but specific brewery stops must be checked individually before travelling.

Alternative: Drive Less, Experience More Beer

If beer is the main goal, a pure car tour is not ideal. These versions are better:

Better Options for Beer Drinkers

  • Stay in Forchheim: experience Kellerwald and old town on foot.
  • Fünf-Seidla-Steig: train and hiking instead of car.
  • Aufseßer Brauereienweg: beer hiking trail with accommodation or organised return.
  • Hallerndorf/Kreuzberg: plan VGN leisure bus, taxi or overnight stay.
  • Choose a brewery village: arrive, leave the car parked, walk to the tavern.

Renting a Car

If you do not arrive with your own car, renting in Nuremberg, Bamberg or Forchheim can work. Nuremberg usually has the wider choice, while Bamberg and Forchheim are closer to the route. But again: a rental car is useful for landscape, villages and logistics, not as a licence to drink beer.

Where to Sleep

If you have two days, the route becomes much more relaxed. Many small places have inns, guesthouses or holiday apartments. Some brewery inns offer rooms, often directly through their own website or by phone. For reliable booking, Forchheim and Ebermannstadt are the easier bases.
