The most important Franconian beer festivals are the Erlanger Bergkirchweih (Whitsun, since 1755, world's oldest beer festival), the Annafest in Forchheim (late July, since 1840), and the Bamberger Sandkerwa (August). Alongside these, numerous smaller Kirchweih parish festivals take place in summer and autumn. Brewery Bockbier Anstich tap ceremonies are a separate ritual, usually in October and March.

The Kirchweih Tradition
Beyond the major festivals, Franconia has a dense network of village church festivals ("Kerwa") in hundreds of towns and villages throughout the region. Each Kirchweih has its own Kirchweihbier — a special seasonal beer from the local brewery brewed specifically for the occasion. The Kerwa season runs from spring through autumn; most fall in August and September. Anyone travelling through Fränkische Schweiz will almost certainly encounter one.
